When he returned to Hong Kong from a holiday in Britain on

13 December 1969 the Governor announced that Her Majesty had again

approved an extension of his term of office. This was for six months

and it meant that by October 1970 he would have served for 6 years as

Governor of Hong Kong.

With the approach of that date public interest and press

speculation has naturally been increasing and questions were put to

Mr. Michael Stewart, the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth

Affairs, when he visited Hong Kong on April 19.

Mr. Stewart was asked if he would give any indication of who the

next Governor will be and "whether Sir David's term of office will be

extended again?" Mr. Stewart replied:- "I am afraid I can't give you

an indication of that at a press conference and you will appreciate that

this has been very much in my mind and that we shall have to reach a

decision on this matter."
