following is the text of the announcement that we

would propose to issue in London.

"The tern of office of the present Governor

of Hong Kong, Sir David Trench, G.C.M.G., M.C. 2

expires in October 1971. Her Majesty The Queen

has been pleased to approve the appointment of

Mr. C. M. MacLehose, C.M.G., M.B.E., at present

H.M. Ambassador in Copenhagen, as his successor

as Governor."

You may find it helpful to have the following

biographical notes on MacLehose. Mr. MacLehose was

born on 16 October, 1917, and was educated at Rugby and

Balliol. He was appointed to the Colonial Service for

service in Malaya in 1939 and appointed Vice-Consul at

Amoy in 1941. He was seconded to the Royal Navy for

service in China 1943 and in 1944 appointed Acting

Consul at Foochow. In 1947 he transferred to the

Foreign Service and was appointed Acting Consul at

Hankow the same year. He returned to the Foreign

Office in 1950 and in 1951 was appointed First

Secretary (Commercial) at Prague. In 1954 he was.

seconded to the Commonwealth Relations Office for

service in Wellington and in 1957 appointed First

Secretary (Commercial) at Paris. In 1959 he was

promoted Counsellor and seconded to the Colonial Office
