The first cottage areas were established in 1948 for squatters

in central areas who were offered sites in more outlying districts

which, it was then thought, would not be required for other

development in the foreseeable future. Gradually these areas

are being redeveloped and the present occupants of cottage

resettlement areas needed for transit centres or permanent

development are given priority in the allocation of resettlement

accommodation-7.

GOVERNMENT LOW COST HOUSING

Purpose

Housing for families with below $500 a month living in

overcrowded and sub-standard accommodation with 15% reserved

for junior staff in Government service.

Responsibility

Built by the Public Works Department.

Controlled by the

Government but under Housing Authority policies as regards

tenant selection and estate management.

Allocation

Applicants for this type of housing and Housing Authority

accommodation (see below) are invited to register on a
