SECRETARY OF STATE'S VISIT
As you know, the Secretary of State gave
a Press Conference at Kaitak on 19 April at the end of his visit to Hong Kong.
I attach a copy
of the transcript. I thought you might be interested to see a selection of Hong Kong newspapers of 20 April containing reports of the Press Conference, and these are enclosed.
2.
The two points in which the press showed particular interest were the succession to Sir David Trench and the need for a greater voice for elected representatives in Hong Kong in their own affairs. The Fress reports reflect some impatience on the latter point. But on the whole the Press Conference was uncontentious and passed off reasonably well.
