16. QUESTION:

Does Britain intend to allow a greater local

participation in the government of the Colony, e.g., by

granting greater powers to the Urban Council?

ANSWER:

It seems to us that a question in this form is most

unlikely to be asked. The answer to any questions about

developments in the field of local government should be on

the following lines:-

"I understand that the Hong Kong Government have

proposals under consideration.

I shall be greatly

interested to see these when they are ready."

The up-to-date position about the new proposals is not

known here. It will, therefore, be necessary to check this

answer with the Hong Kong authorities.
