As you know, I had two days in Hong Kong
during my recent visit to the Far East.
2. I found a strong feeling throughout my
discussions in Hong Kong that the Colony was, as
it were, somewhat misunderstood and neglected by
H.M.G. Such feelings derive in part from
differences of view between us and Hong Kong on
trade matters.
3. I think I was able to diminish this feeling
but I am sure we must take every opportunity to
demonstrate our interest in and concern with the
problems of Hong Kong.
4. I understand that you have been invited by
BOAC to join their inaugural flight to Tokyo on
the Trans-Siberian route early in June. In the
circumstances, I very much hope you will feel able
to visit Hong Kong while you are in the Far East.
What I have in mind is that you might spend a day
or two in the Colony listening to local views and
reassuring the members of the Executive and
Legislative Councils that we have proper regard
to the interests of Hong Kong when we are
formulating our own policies. At the same time
you may wish to look at the U.K. share of the
Hong Kong market.
