To enable an assessment to be made of the length of pile required for the various alternative quaywall alignments, test piling was carried out at five positions.

Two piles were used, one 120 ft. long and the other 90 ft. long and these were fabricated by welding two lengths of sheet piling together to form a box section. The longer pile was driven and extracted in one position. The shorter pile was driven and extracted in 3 positions, then driven and extended to 155 ft. and driven further in the last position. This pile has been left in place and a tide gauge attached to it to enable wave-height readings to be taken during the south-west monsoon period.

The piles were all driven to refusal, left in position overnight and then redriven the following day before being extracted. The results of this test piling are shown in Appendix 2 and the positions of the tests on Drawing 8.
