that they would be prepared to invest considerable

capital in the development of container facilities.

(b) United States Lines

The United States Lines are presently investigating

various ports in South-East Asia to find which one

would best suit them as an operational base and

centre for the region. They have expressed the

hope that Hong Kong will be able to provide the

facilities that they require to institute a regular

weekly container-ship service between the East

Coast ports of the United States and the Far East

by June, 1970.

(c) The Matson Company

The Matson Company, which is one of the largest

American container-ship lines, have also

expressed an interest in making Hong Kong the

base for their container-ship operations in

South-East Asia. They are at present proposing

to a ke uso of Hong Kong and Kowloon harf and

Godown Co.ltd.'s container terminal at Thin Sha

Tsui when it is ready early next year, but only for an

interim period during which they will still be

using self-sustaining ships. Matsons have on

order two 34,000-ton non-self-sustaining ships

earmarked for the U.S. West Coast/Far East
