I am of course aware of all the major

difficulties in all this, and that there will be many

aspects I have not covered, but I should nevertheless be

glad if all concerned, including of course the Housing

Board, would provide me with their views on, and an

assessment of, this problem of dealing with squatters on

land not required in the forseeable future for development:

covering the following points in particular

(a) what is the estimated number of such squatters

(urban areas only);

(b) what would be the full implications and

practicability of the two possible courses referred

to in para 4;

(c) are there any alternative suggestions for a

feasible way of dealing with these squatters (other

than that they can, of course, apply for low-cost

housing).

There would be no objection to the

substantive Chairman of the Board on return, and of

course officials on the Board, seeing this minute in its

entirely if desired.
