KWAI FONG LOW COST HOUSING ESTATE

Phase III To Begin Soon

*******

The first two phases of the Kwai Fong government low-cost housing

estate are now well-advanced, and work on phase III is to begin soon.

Built on reclaimed land by Kwai Chung Road, a new level coastal

link between Kowloon and Tsuen Wan, the $45 million estate will eventually

house 42,500.

The first two phases include two seven-storey, one 12-storey and

five 20-storey blocks, two estate schools, and markets with stalls for fruit,

vegetable, fish, meat and poultry.

Phase III covers three 20-storey blocks, two estate schools and

another market.

Shops, a post office, a restaurant, welfare services, and an estate

office complete the facilities to be provided.

The first two phases are expected to be ready by next August, and

the whole estate not later than 1973.

Work is to start this December on the construction and surfacing

of internal service roads, open carparks and a bus sub-terminus. About

6,000 feet of stormwater drains and sewers ranging from nine to 60 inch

diameter in size will also be laid.

Recreation grounds take up about one-third of the 20.7 acre estate,

and facilities will include a mini-soccer pitch, one volleyball and six

basketball courts, and children's playgrounds. Most of the sitting-out areas

will be turfed. Shrubs and flowers will be planted to brighten up the environment.

The ancillary services were designed, and construction will be supervised,

by the Highways Office, New Territories Division, of the Public Works Department.
