ACTING GOVERNOR OPENS 500TH RESETTLEMENT BLOCK

AND 50TH ESTATE SCHOOL

Full Text of Sir Hugh's Speech

********

The following is the full text of the speech given by Sir Hugh

Norman-Walker, the Acting Governor, at this (Thursday) afternoon's opening

ceremony of the 500th resettlement block and 50th estate school at Lam Tin:

"Eleven years ago in November 1959 the then Colonial Secretary,

Mr. Burgess, referring to the magnitude of the task that lay ahead, said

that he saw no alternative to building a 101st, a 150th, a 200th resettlement

block and if that was to be achieved enthusiasm and resolution could not

be allowed to flag in any quarter.

"We have passed these milestones long since;

without ceremony

the 300th, the 400th blocks have been built and filled with people.

"But to-day is a special event: the completion of the 500th block

deserves commemoration; it is the right moment to look back at what has been

achieved; to remember all those who have contributed to this achievement;

to review the scope and nature of the changes that have been introduced over

the years and to grasp the ineluctable nature of the housing commitment.
