Hong Kong Defence Contribution

With my letter to you of 9 February I enclosed a copy of my letter to the Governor asking when we might expect a reply to Bir Leslie Monson's letter of 9 October on the above subject.

My letter to the Governor crossed with one from him in which he stated that they were having difficulty in Hong Kong in interpreting the figures in Annex B to Monson's letter. Apparently the Hong Kong Government have asked the local military authorities for a breakdown of the projects to which the figures relate. The latter have had to refer back to your Ministry for clarification and the results are awaited.

I am not sure whether this would be handled in your department, But I should be grateful if whoever is engaged on this task would either transmit the results to the Governor through us or, alternatively, provide us with a copy of whatever information is sent forward through your local channels.

I am sending a copy of this letter to Philip Nicholls in the Treasury.
