VISNEWS REQUEST FOR TV INTERVIEW WITH THE SECRETARY OF STATE ON THE FAR EAST

As requested in your loose minute of 30 November, I attach draft material for this interview. I have numbered the questions attached to CPR's loose minute of 5 November QA1, 2, etc, and those attached to your loose minute QB1, 2, etc.

answer:

2. I understand that there may be one further question on numbers of personnel in Singapore and Hong Kong, to which I suggest the following

"In Hong Kong the present force level including support is about 10,000 and is expected to remain substantially the same in the future. The support arrangements in the Malaysia and Singapore area are still being worked out, but we calculate that after 1971 the numbers of uniformed

personnel will be between 3,000 and 4,000 including support

and the ships on station East of Suez.

It is unlikely, I understand, that there will be any further supplementary questions. I will, however, send you some material on Brunei tomorrow in case this is raised.

In view of the comparatively small number of questions to be asked, we have made our draft answers longer rather than shorter.
