THE FUTURE LAND FORCE LEVELS OF THE HONG KONG GARRISON

INTRODUCTION

1. Before the Secretary of State for Defence undertook his

recent consultative tour of the Far East, the Defence and

Overseas Policy Committee authorised (1) guidance on the possible

stationing of UK forces in Singapore/Malaysia and in Brunei after

1971. Following the Secretary of State's return it is necessary,

in advance of the Study on the UK Military Presence in SE Asia

Post 1971 (2), to examine the relationship between land force

levels in SE Asia/Brunei and Hong Kong after 1971 with particular

reference to the size of the Hong Kong garrison.

AIM

2.

The aim of this study is to examine the effect on the future

size of the Hong Kong garrison of any continuing land force presence

in Singapore and Brunei.

3.

ASSUMPTIONS

It is assumed that after 1971:

One British battalion group will be stationed in
