FUTURE COMMAND ARRANGEMENTS IN SOUTH EAST ASIA
Report by the Defence Policy Staff
1. In accordance with the instructions (1) of the Chief of the Defence Staff, we have re-drafted our study of future command arrangements in South East Asia.
2.
As instructed, we have concentrated on an integrated ANZUK command system and reduced the number of one star posts. We have also simplified the paper by considering only those factors which affect directly the command structure.
3. The key factor in setting up an integrated ANZUK structure will be the formation of an ANZUK Brigade. If for political reasons this proves to be impossible, then it will be necessary to accept
We have not the less desirable parallel UK and ANZ structures. considered in this paper the various reasons why the formation of a Brigade might not be possible, such as the possible variation between the UK and ANZ land forces in commitments to SEATO plans, since these are factors directly affecting the formation of the
ANZUK Brigade, rather than the overall command structure.
