As I told the House on 25 July 1968 the Hong Kong garrison

will be strengthened to take account of the reinforcement

time from Britain.

TO REQUESTS FOR DETAILS OF INCREASES

It is not the practice to disclose detailed deployment

plans.

DEFENCE OBLIGATIONS IN FIJI AFTER INDEPENDENCE?

As My Rt Hon Friend the Minister of State for Foreign and

Commonwealth Affairs said in another place on the 10th,

February this is clearly a subject that would be discussed

formally at the forthcoming Constitutional Conference about

arrangements for finalising the independence of FIJI.

TO QUESTIONS ABOUT FIJI'S CONSTITUTIONAL STATUS

That is a matter for My Rt Hon Friend the Foreign and

Commonwealth Secretary.

We shall be able to use a variety of routes both Eastabout

and Westabout.

As I have said I am not prepared to discuss details of

possible operational deployments; these would in any case depend on the amount of warning received and the size and

nature of the forces required.
