EFFECT OF A UNITED KINGDOM MILITARY PRESENCE
IN SE ASIA FOST-1971 ON THE EXISTING FAR EAST RUNDOWN PLAN
Draft Report by the Defence Operational Planning Staff
1. In accordance with the instructions (1) of the Chief of the Defence Staff, we have examined a study by Headquarters Far East Command, together with a covering letter (2) by the Commander-in-Chief, Far East, on the effect of a United Kingdom Military Presence in SE Asia post-1971 on the existing Far East rundown plan.
2. We have consulted the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Staff of the Chief of Personnel and Logistics, the Defence Intelligence Staff, and the Defence Secretariat. Our report
is at Annex A.
Recommendations
3.
We recommend that if they approve our report, the Chiefs of Staff should:
a.
Forward it to the Secretary of State as an expression of their views. A draft submission is at Annex B (to be included at final draft stage).
b. Subject to approval by the Secretary of State, authorise its use as a basis for further planning after the 4 other Governments have been informed of the UK intention to modify the rundown plan.
