DF 31/70(C)(Flimsy Draft) (Concluded)

garrison to 63 major units and the use of double earmarking the Singapore and Brunei battalions as an immediate reinforcement for

Hong Kong.

CONCLUSION

20.

We conclude that after 1971 the Hong Kong garrison be either 7 or 6 major units with all reinforcement unit at 72 hours notice

availablo within the Theatre.

21.

We further conclude that it will be feasible to double earmark the Singapore and Brunei battalions to reinforce Hong Kong at 72 hours notice but that there are possible political difficulties

We should therefore retain the and practical constraints.

This will ·

permanent garrison of 73 major units if possible. probably depend on the final approval of the fifth Gurkha

battalion.

22. We finally conclude that if financial constraints prevent the continuation of the Fifth Gurkha battalion, we must accept the Hong Kong garrison at 63 mejor units with double earmarking the Singapore and Brunei battalion as immediate reinforcement.
