Mr. J. Canning, the Director of Education, told the Legislative

Council today he estimated that by 1971 there would be 650,000 Government

and aided primary school places available to meet the needs of a primary

asked if the Government was aware of the recent closure of a number of

private primary schools. He wanted to know if this would, in any way,

affect the programe of providing a primáry school place for overy child.

Mr. Canning said the total enrolment in private primary schools

was known to have dropped by nearly 15,000 since September, 1968

reduction caused in part when 5,000 of these places were brought on to

subsidy.
