6th April 1970

*La/Co. Mr. John Rankin (Glasgow, Govan): To ask the

Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, if he will consult with the Government of Hong Kong with a view to introducing free primary education for all children within the ages of six to 11 years: and how many young persons in that age group are not, at present, attending school.

NO. 26

MR. EVAN LUARD

It is the Hong Kong Government's aim to

provide free primary education for all who desire

it and we are in constant touch with the Hong Kong

Government about this issue. The total number of

places available in Government and subsidised

primary schools is expected by the end of this

year to exceed the estimated number of children

of primary school age desiring places in such

schools.
