DISCUSSIONS IN LONDON
On Colony Interests In U.K.'s Common Market Negotiations
*******
The Financial Secretary, Sir John Cowperthwaite, and the Director
of Commerce and Industry, Mr. J. Cater, will leave Hong Kong by air for
London this week for discussions with the British Government.
These discussions will concern the course of Britain's negotiations
for entry into the European Economic Community as they may affect Hong Kong.
When Britain's chief negotiator, Mr. Geoffrey Rippon, visited
Hong Kong in September for preliminary discussions, it was agreed that
these would be resumed with him in London as soon as some indication had
been received of the Community's probable attitudes in areas affecting Hong
Kong's interests.
While in London, opportunity will also be taken for discussions
of other trade matters of interest to Hong Kong, including the UNCTAD
generalised Preference Scheme.
The Governor, at present in Britain on leave, will also attend the
main discussions.
Sir John and Mr. Cater are expected to be away one week.
