I am very sorry we have been so long in sending you our comments on the draft paper on Hong Kong which you circulated on 22 July. However, we have only a few minor amendments and these are as follows :-

(a)

Paragraph 1. lines 1 and 2

Delete "well under a million" and substitute "about 600,000".

(b) Paragraph 1. line 3

(c)

(a)

Delete whole line and substitute "immigration from China is now controlled, the ...

"

There is, in fact, a quota of up to fifty a day but Hong Kong continues to attract more than its share of illegal immigrants not only from China and Macao but also increasingly from other countries in South East Asia.

Paragraph 1. line 9

The age we quote is 21 rather than 20.

Paragraph 3

According to the 1969 Annual Report, Appendix XIX, page 283, Hong Kong's principal markets for domestic exports are as follows (the figures are for 1969):

USA UK

42% 14%

Federal Republic

of Germany

Japan

Canada

Australia Singapore

2%

Hong Kong's re-exports are, of course, not insignificant but I imagine it will be sufficient for your purposes to include the figures for domestic exports only.

J. R. D. Gildea, Esq.,

Board of Trade.
