In order to find out how these serious social and economic problems should be met, the Government appointed in 1968 a Commission of experts to inquire into the matter. The Commission presented some preliminary findings a few months ago recommending measures to promote exports and to improve vocational training. The definite findings and conclusions of the Commission remain, however, to be presented and it is not possible to state when this can be done. the meantime, however, as the information given above indicates, the Swedish textile industry is under a continuous and painful process of adaptation to present-day needs and conditions.

To sum up I should like to draw your attention to the fact that Hongkong exports of clothing to Sweden last year increased considerably more than total Hongkong exports of these items. The figures according to official Hongkong statistics are 37% and 27% respectively. In 1968 these figures were 8% and 26%. The figures speak for themselves and show that existing export restrictions during 1969 have only had a limited effect. That is why we now have to extend these restrictions.
