Telegram No. 715 from Washington, regarding a
possible visit to this country from Mr. Trezise, was
considered and a draft reply discussed. It was agreed
that a revised draft be prepared and circulated as
soon as possible for quick comment.
2. In the course of the discussions about the draft
reply the question was raised of whether Mr. Hermann,
in the Washington Embassy, would know about the telegram;
Mr. Nicoll phoned Mr. Ridley in Washington and established
that he did know but had not yet told Hong Kong. In
view of this it was agreed that it was clearly more
than ever essential that Mr. Trezise should be warned
that we would have to tell a limited circle in Hong Kong
about the proposed visit.
