OFFIC OF THE COMMONWEALTH SECRETARY-GENERAL

MARLBOROUGH HOUSE PALL MALL LONDON SW1

A

Circular Letter No. 75/70

7 September, 1970.

Commonwealth Consultations on Generalised Preferences

At the conclusion of the informal consultations held in Geneva in April, 1970, there was a general consensus to the effect that the next Commonwealth consultations on Generalised Preferences might usefully take place immediately before or during the next session of the Special Committee on Preferences. On behalf of the Secretariat the assurance was given that it would stand ready to facilitate such further consultations,

Intimation has since been received that the next meeting of the Committee will be held in Geneva in two parts, the first a brief one from the 21st September, and the second from 1st to 9th October, 1970.

It is considered that these meetings of the Committee would be an appropriate occasion for resuming the informal consultations among Commonwealth representatives, and it is therefore proposed that the further consultations might be arranged during the second part on the 5th October and if necessary also the next day.

As before, the meetings will take place for about an hour or an hour and a half on the day(s) fixed, so as to conclude before the main meetings commence on those days. It is expected that the same facilities as were provided by the UNCTAD Secretariat for the earlier consultations will be available.

I shall be grateful if you will inform your Government of the above and notify the Conference Officer of the Secretariat of the names of their representatives who will be attending these meetings.

Yours sincerely,

Smith
