Equal Pay for Women
Mrs. Barbara Castle has recently received the two
enclosed telegrams on the subject of equal pay for women,
particularly in the teaching and nursing professions.
2.
Could you please reply to the organizations concerned
on our behalf, acknowledging receipt. For your information
a copy of the Equal Pay (No 2) Bill is enclosed. This is
at present passing through the Committee Stage in the House
of Commons, and has not yet been enacted as the telegrams
suggest. It is noted that it is the intention of the Hong Kong Government to achieve equal pay for women employed
in the Public Service by 1st April 1975, and that the U.K.
scheme, although covering different areas of employment,
aims at the date of 29th December 1975. You may consider it worthwhile drawing the attention of the organizations
to this fact.
3. We should be grateful for an early reply to our Despatch No. 35 of 23rd January 1970. The absence of any reply to the Hong Kong Chinese Civil Servants Association's petition
appears to be drawing some unfavourable comment.
