1/28/2/20.

out by the Labour Department.

Three months ago a similar campaign revealed that about ten por

cent of factories inspected were employing children.

Announcing this today, Assistant Commissioner of Labour, Mr. H.

Williams said: "I must emphasise that this encouragingly low level of abuse

was found in areas specially selected because of a suspected high rate of

child employment and at a time during the school holidays when more childron

tend to work."

Mr. Williams added that there was evidence to suggest that

increasingly heavy fines imposed by the Courts were having a deterrent effect.

The campaign, carried out on July 23 and 24 involved the inspection

of 1,186 factories and 108 children were found working in 78 premises.

Proprietors in 153 of the factories visited had previously been

convicted for employing children.

in contravention of the law.

Sixteen of them were found still to be

In Tai Kok Tsui, where several proprietors had been heavily fined

following a campaign there in February, only two of the 42 factorios visited

were found to be employing children.
