"The latest score on night work for women

is that it is still very much of a flop.

Up to

date, I have authorised twelve cotton-spinning

.mills to operate schemes but only seven have been

able to do so. Because of practical difficulties,

I agreed in July to allow cotton spinning mills to

start on a minimum shift of 40 working up according

to fixed monthly schedules to 100 by the Lunar

New Year. Even with this concession, managements

have run into recruitment difficulties. At the

moment, only 417 women are working as operatives

on night shifts in seven mills. There is no

controversy on this subject locally".
