Night Work for Women.

10.

In July, because of practical difficulties in the operation

of schemes for night work for women, the Commissioner of Labour

agreed to allow cotton spinning mills to start on a minimum

shift of 40 staff working up according to fixed monthly schedules

to 100 (the original minimum laid down) by the Lunar New Year.

Despite this concession, there have been recruitment difficulties.

So far, 12 cotton spinning mills have been authorised to operate

night shifts but only 7 have been able to do so. Only 417 women

are at present working on night shift.

Factory Conditions.

11.

The retired Chief Inspector of Factories (UK) and the

Deputy Chief Inspector of Factories are undertaking a review

of the Factory Inspection arrangements in Hong Kong. They are

expected to spend about six weeks in Hong Kong.
