Lord Shepherd suggested that he should also

go over the report with the Members of Parliament. It is clear, therefore, that

Mr. John Rankin is fully aware of the

present position.

On 2 March Mr. Luard answered a question by Mr. Thornton explaining the arrangements made for the employment of women on night

work.

3. We sent a telegram to Hong Kong this morning informing the Governor of Mr. Rankin's Question down for answer on 6 April and requesting up-to-date details of the applications received and granted. Until we have a reply to that telegram (requested by 9 a.m. on 6 April) it is not possible satisfactorily to draft an answer to Mr. Rankin's Question.

The final terms of the proposed draft reply attached can be settled on Monday morning.
