REDUCTION OF WORKING HOURS FOR WOMEN AND YOUNG PERSONS

Third Phase Implemented-

All 9,762 known factorios have now complied with tho third phase

of the programme for the progrossivo reduction of working hours for woman

and young porsons in industrial employment in Hong Kong under the Factorios

and Industrial Undertakings (Amondment) Rogulations, 1967.

The Commissioner of Labour, Mr. R.M. Hothorington, told the

Logislative Council this afternoon that the third phaso, which began on

Docombor 1, 1969, was introduced in a satisfactory and uneventful mannor

and there were few complaints from workers, although in some cases, now

working schedulos wore adjusted to moot complaints.

Ho said that thore woro only 288 applications, compared with 472

in tho provious year, to defer the introduction of the new hours, which

in this latest phase were reduced to night hours and 40 minutes a day and

52 hours a wock.

Mr. Hetherington said: "No reports were received of any reduction

of carnings. The timing of the third phase coincided with a period of

economic buoyancy which provided an opportunity for a widespread increase

in wago ratos."

The fourth phase will begin on December 1, 1970 when standard working

hours will be further decreased to right hours and 20 minutos a day and 50

hours a wock.`

Mr. Hotherington axprossed the hopo that managements will mako "timely

pròparations".

"By then, the scheme will have boon in operation for three years

and I cxpoct that applications for temporary deformont will be mado only in

the most exceptional circumstancos," he said.
