Persons employed in registered and recorded industrial undertakings

totallod 561,563 in the last quarter of 1969, or an increase of 1,851

over the previous quarter, Mr. R.M. Hothorington, the Commissionor of Labour,

announced today.

Industrial undertakings totalled 14,754, or an incroase of 347

over the third quarter.

Of the 14,754, Mr. Hothorington said 1,003 had reported a total

of 18,312 vacancies a docroaso of 254 vacancies over the mumber roport od by 1,035 undertakings previously.

Industries reporting the main increases in employment wore: motal

products, 1,374; wigs, 890; wool spinning, 733; and rubber footwear, 659.

The largest number of workers, 227,857, was employed in the manufacture

of toxtilos and textile made-up goods.

The second and third largest numbers were 72,284 in plastics, and

50,690 in electrical machinery, apparatus, appliances and supplios. Mr.

Hetherington said those three industries continued to employ most labour, though

omployment in the manufacture of textile mado-up goods showed a "slight decrease

of 3,470 persons compared with the previous quartor."
