This inevitably caused great anxiety, and he

hoped that Mr. Ma would soon let us have

better news, particularly over Mr. Crouch and

Mr. Johnston. If they were released

reasonably quickly we could forget about this

problem and consider more fruitful ways of

increasing contacts. Mr. Ma repeated his

earlier statement about prisoners in Hong Kong

and about British subjects detained in China.
