After an exchange of courtesies Sir Alec Douglas-
Home said that Sino-British relations were slowly
improving and that we hoped that this improvement
would continue. Mr. Ma said that the Chinese
Government welcomed the British Government's assurances
that they wished to improve relations. The Chinese
Government also wanted to improve relations and had
taken quite a few steps in this direction. Relations i
were certainly better than before.

Sir Alec Douglas-Home reaffirmed that the British
Government hoped for further improvement but were
concerned about British subjects detained in China. In
particular there were the cases of Mr. Crouch and
Mr. Johnston, He hoped that steps would be taken to
release them soon, so that this particular obstacle in
our relations could be removed.
3. Mr. Ma said that the Chinese Government had
stated many times that the relevant authorities in
China were dealing with these cases in accordance
