Terminal Area Surveillance Radar Souipment
As you are aware, we understand that, in assessing the offers which have been made by various companies since the issue, in October 1966, of a brief specification for the Hongkong terminal area surveillance radar, the civil aviation authorities there have preferred the equipment offered by Selenia to that of Plessey Radar. We consider that the choice of a non-British radar equipment for Hongkong would have an adverse effect on a wider scale than that of the immediate circumstances, and we have accordingly approached the Board of Trade in this matter.
We feel that in the somewhat long interval which has elapsed since the visit to Plessey Radar of the D.C.A.'s representatives, there have been significant developments in our 23cm. radar, including the introduction of digital m.t.i., improvements in signal processing techniques and the proving of our AR-5 system generally, together with the procurement by the Board of Trade of two of these equipments for their new site in the West of England. You will also be aware of our recent success in Ireland where, in competition with Selenia, C.S.F., Telefunken and Marconi, we were awarded the contract for the new L-Band radar for Dublin Airport.
In a number of international competitive situations recently, Selenia prices have tended to be of the same order as those of Plessey Radar and in most cases have been about 5% above them. It is our opinion therefore, which appears to be shared by those in the Board of Trade whom we have
