Kai Tak Runway Extension

I had lunch with Thomson, the Director of Civil Aviation, yesterday and questioned him about the proposed road tunnel under the runway at Kai Tak. It appears that the proposed alignment of the road tunnel has been altered bringing it under the aircraft hard standing and much closer to the Kowloon City end of the existing runway. was previously going to be tunnelled under the runway at a point several hundred yards further towards the sea.

2. The new alignment combined with the cut and cover methods which will have to be employed are making Thoms on insist that nothing can be done on his territory for aircraft safety reasons, until the runway is extended.

3. You will know that the road improvement is absolutely essential if Kwun Tong is not to be strangled.

You may draw your own conclusions therefore as to whether the Hong Kong Government will build the runway extension at their expense should H.M.G. fail to provide a loan.
