The Hong Kong Government has plans to extend the runway at Kai Tak Airport by 2,500 feet (from the present 8650 feet to 11,150 feet) and to expand and improve other facilities (apron parking area, terminal building, cargo handling complex, air traffic control system).

The purpose of these improvements is to enable the Airport 1-

(a) to cope with the fast increasing passenger and cargo traffic - it is forecast that over the next ten years scheduled air movements will increase by some 12% per annus, passenger traffic b:y 17% p.a. and air cargo traffic by 30% per annum;

to meet the increasing requirements of the present generation of aircraft (the existing long-range jet aircraft operate andar a payload penalty), and also the requirements of the new generation: jumbo-jet

Jumbo-jet (Boeing 747) and 89T (e.g. Concorde).
