PRIORITY PEKING TO FOREIGN AND COMMONWEALTH OFFICE

Telno 435

CONFIDENTIAL

29 July, 1969

Addressed to FCO telegram No.435 of 29 July,

Repeated for information to Hong Kong.

Hong Kong telegram No.592 to FCO: Imprisonment of Communist Trade Union Officials.

Although the hearing proceeded quietly, this case cannot

fail to have unfortunate repercussions for Sino/British relations as whether we like it or not the Chinese still regard Hong Kong as the crux.

For this reason, I really must ask that in future

I receive some advance warning of developments of this sort which are likely to result in court cases and terms of imprisonment for Communist sympathizers.

FCO pass routine Hong Kong.

Mr. Denson.

[Repeated as requested]
