nown as his pensionable emoluments). This actor is multiplied by the number of completed months of pensionable service. For example, an officer retiring with a salary, which is £2,400 after 20 years' service, will receive the following pension:-

The pension payable is subject to a maximum of two-thirds of the officer's pensionable emoluments at the time of his retirement.

An officer must contribute 4% of his pensionable emoluments to a local Widows' and Orphans' Pension Scheme, unless he is already contributing to an approved scheme. Application for exemption must be made within three months of starting to draw salary.

AN INTEREST-FREE LOAN of £60 may be had on first appointment to help cover initial expenses. It must be repaid during the first year of service.

OVERSEAS EDUCATION ALLOW- ANCES are available to an officer for up to three of his children between the age of 11 and 18 who are full-time boarders at a school in his country of origin.

PASSAGES to and from Hong Kong are free. An officer must travel by air to Hong Kong and he will get an Economy class passage. A married officer will also get free passages for his wife and children in each direction, once during each tour, providing this does not involve more than five full return passages.

LEAVE is granted on the following scale:- Under the of 40, or over the age of 35

42 days per year or proportionate part of a year. The length of a tour is 3 years. Forty years and over, regardless of length of service, or over 35 with 10 years service:

59 days per year or proportionate part of a year. The length of a tour is 21 years. Local leave up to a maximum of 12 days a year may also be granted. If, after three years, an officer is admitted to the permanent and pensionable establishment, he must com- plete a further 6 months service before going on home leave.

SCHOOL PASSAGES SCHEME. Once during each tour of duty, an officer will be able to bring up to three of his children, who are being educated outside Hong Kong, to the Colony to spend either their summer, Christmas or Easter school holidays with him.

These passages are in addition to the chil- dren's normal entitlements.

OTHER BENEFITS include free uniforms, boots and shoes, free medical and dental attention, with low maintenance charges when hospital treatment is necessary.

Probationary Inspectors who have passed their initial examinations may apply for a Government loan to help them buy a car.

THE CLIMATE. Hong Kong is within the tropics and there are four well-marked seasons. Spring (March - April) is damp and misty. Summer (May - mid-September), has average temperatures around the low 80s, occasionally rising to over 90. The greater part of the Colony's rain falls during this season and the weather is often oppressive- ly humid. Autumn (September - November) is pleasant and dry. Winter (December- February) is dry and cool enough to wear English clothing.
