the British Prime Minister about corruption. The letter was referred back to Hong Kong and nothing changed. In any case, it's the extent rather than the details of the allegations that's so alarming. The police themselves operate an anti- corruption department. The head of it is Superintendent Peter Law. If anything, his answers to our questions tended to confirm the allegations. He admitted police corruption made up much of his work.

Mr. Law:

It does take a lot of time. There is corruption in the police force but there is no more corruption in the police force than in any other Government department, this I state categorically. It is only because the police force I believe come into contact with the public rather more often than other Government departments and often, shall we say, vexatiously, it's an irritating contact often with public that so many allegations are made.

Interviewer: Have you any idea how many cases you investigate of police corruption?

Mr. Law: Of police corruption, I think that I dealt with about a hundredand four cases last year of police corruption, which were successes, in one way or another, and about half that amount against members of other Government departments. These were successful cases that we dealt with in one way or another. Interviewer: And out of how many allegations?

Mr. Law: Approximately six hundred and fifty allegations which were accepted for investigation during the year.

Interviewer: This is a pretty high number of investigations out of the number of police.

Mr. Law: Well the police force is something over twelve thousand strong, I think it's a fairly small percentage, quite frankly.
