Mr. Gaminara
I have spoken to Mr. Macoun about his letter to the Commissioner of Police.
He has not yet had a reply about the timing of the visit of the Hong Kong Police Force Band. He has, however, heard from the organisers of the Royal Tournament that they would like the Hong Kong Police Force Band to take part in next years Royal Tournament. Mr. Macoun has therefore telegraphed Hong Kong giving them this information and asking for confirmation that the Band will come.
2.
Until we know the dates of the Hong Kong Police Force Band's visit to this country we cannot put up a submission to the Permanent Under Secretary with a view to an informal approach being made to Sir Michael Adeane. Until an informal approach is made to Sir Michael Adeane we cannot say whether a member of the Royal Family will accept in an honorary capacity the post of Commandant-General. If, for any reason, no member of the Royal Family can accept the post the Governor has said that he would then like the opportunity of reconsidering the proposal to grant the title "Royal". The Prime Minister's office cannot yet therefore be given a definite decision to pass on to Beutenant-Commander Lynch Maydon M.P.but they need not, on the other hand, be too discouraging. I attach a draft letter to No. 10.
