Thank you for your letter of 17 February about the Hong Kon; Police Force.

The queen has approved, informally, the proposal to accord the title "Royal" to the Hong Kong Police and Auxiliary Police Forces; and Princess Alexandra has agreed, again informally, to become honorary "Commandant General" to the two Forces. making the necessary formal submissions to the Palace.

We are now

We have informed the Governor of Hong Kong of the position reached and of the Prime Minister's decision to proceed by way of an arranged Parliamentary question. We have also acked nim to let us know of any Hong Kong considerations which may need to be taken into account in framing the Question and answer, and in arranging the timing of the latter.

Although forecasts are risky, we think we should be in a position to make an announcement within the next two weeks. I shall keep you informed of progress.
