make progress over the long-standing question of Chinese
marriages. As Hon. Members know, the recommendations
made in the White Fapor of 13 have as their object
the provision of now legislation enabling Chinese people
10 ong Kong to marry according to the form of their
choice and to have their marriage recogaised in law by
formal registration.
At the same time the recommendation3

practices which it is thought would not generally be
acceptable in Hong Kong's society today

Arafting is at present in progress on the preparation
of the new legislation, during the course of which careful
scasiforation has been given to the views of the public ·

principles set out in the Whit: Faper. It has also been
