to their former places of employment to demand back their jobs; on
occasion these became disorderly forcing the police to take action to
disperse them. However, there was a reduction in the size and number of
processions following a written warning to the communist trade unions by
the Commissioner of Police, and, in the face of firm resistance by
Government and the private companies concerned, the communist labour
movement gradually abandoned its reinstatement efforts. Instead "strikers"
were urged to seek any job, it being claimed that by changing their employment
communist followers could propagate MAC's Thoughts "in all corners of the
Colony". Present indications are that "strike allowances" will be
terminated completely before the end of the year and currently there is
intense pressure on the remaining "strikers" to secure any form of
employment in order that the number still drawing the allowance is cut to
a minimum before the complete stoppage is effected.

The de-registration in August of the Chung Wa Middle School
provoked another major propaganda campaign which had some support from
China.
It also provided yet another instance where communist supporters
in Hong Kong were able to see that, despite repeated defiant threats about
the school re-opening notwithstanding the Government order, their leaders
were finally prepared to accept the position in order to avoid a clash
with Government.

Disorderly behaviour has erupted on occasions when police have
arrested communist law-breakers, often involving traffic and hawking offences
but each incident was a spontaneous affair rather than a planned reaction,
stemming from an intensive local communist dislike for conforming with the
law! Again, use of public areas in the city for communist meetings has
