Chinese Propaganda Media in Hong Kong (other than Press)

Their scope and their impact

Introduction

Propaganda is, for the purpose of this paper,

defined as an organised scheme for the propagation and

dissemination of a doctrine or faith. It forms a vital

weapon in the armoury of any communist movement; the

Chinese communists have been no exception to this rule

and over the years have built up a powerful propaganda

machine in Hong Kong. The main propaganda arm of the local

communists is undoubtedly the press and this aspect is

studied in a separate paper (reference C/13/372 dated

21st November, 1968). Other media available to the

communists include news agency releases, periodicals, books

and other publications, films, theatrical performances,

radio broadcasts (from Macao and China), television

broadcasts (from China) and last, but by no means least,

the spoken word. This paper examines briefly the scope of

these media, the type of material they disseminate and

their impact on the population of the Colony.
