NOTES ON ARMY EQUIPMENT IN HONG KONG

SURVEILLANCE EQUIPMENTS

Surveillance requirements in Hong Kong, for gathering intelligence and detecting intruders, have been revised as a result of a study by HQ FARELF and MOD (A) in April 1969. The requirements cover radar, night vision equipment and intruder alarms.

Radars

Radar GS No 14 Mk 1 This is a short range (6000 metres) ground surveillance radar. Priority issue to Hong Kong is planned to begin early 1970. The issue will be a normal scaling for units, i.e. 3 equipments per infantry battalion and 6 equipments per artillery regiment In the interim, one OLIFANT 1 very short range (1500 metres) radar is deployed.

Night Vision Equipment

Starlightscope This is an individual weapon sight using image intensification for use with light support weapons. The requirement is for 14 equipments; are deployed at present and it is planned to complete the issue by the end of 1969.

Crew Served Weapon Sight This is an image intensi- fication sight for use on support weapons.

The require- ment of one has been met.

C. Night Observation Device This is an image intensi- fication equipment for general night surveillance. The requirement is for two equipments, which were deployed in Hong Kong earlier, but had to be withdrawn to UK for Exercise "GIDEON'S NÍGHT" a major exercise to evaluate the capability of night fighting aids.

Low Light Television - At present one equipment is on trial in Hong Kong in order to assess the requirement. (Attention is drawn to the sensitivity of this inform- ation).

Intruder Alarms

This

29 TOBIAS equipments are deployed in Hong Kong. equipment detects movement by seismic effects, and is preferred by the Hong Kong forces to IRIS, the infra-red intruder alarm. The final scaling for Hong Kong is under consideration at present, but it is considered likely that additional equipments of both types will be available in late 1969.
