HONG KONG GARRISON

COMMAND STRUCTURE

1. At present the Commander British Forces (CBF) (sub- ordinate to C-in-C FE) is also Commander Land Forces (subordinate to Commander FARFLF) Subordinate to him are the Commodore Hong Kong, the Deputy Commander Land Forces Hong Kong and the Senior RAF Officer Hong Kong.

2. In April 1970 Hong Kong is to become an independent command. It has been proposed that as the Gurkhas are to be concentrated in Hong Kong the Major General Brigade of Gurkhas (MGBG) should become Deputy Commander Land Forces

This has been Hong Kong at 2 star level in February 1970. approved by the Chiefs of Staff Committee but is subject to the agreement of the Civil Service Department. At present MGBG is Commander 17th Gurkha Division in Malaya.

SIZE OF THT GARRISON

In May 1968 you proposed to DOPC that the Hong Kong garrison should be increased by 1 frigate, 3 mine counter- measures vessels, 1 infantry battalion and 6 Whirlwind helicopters. You also proposed that the Hong Kong Government should meet the full cost of that part of the garrison which is for internal security purposes. agreed your proposals on the size of the garrison but deferred the decision on what kind of financial settlement should be sought.

One frigate, the guardship, reinforced by an additional frigate from Far East Fleet in times of tension, to give added support to maritime police patrols and to act as a deterrent to Chinese Communist Navy interference and local piracy. This ship also constitutes the UK naval contribution to the UN Command in South Korea
