I am writing to ask if you would seek the approval of the Prime Minister to a visit by the Minister of Defence for Administration, Ma. Hattersley, to the Tax East from 25th October to 3rd November. r. Hattersley intends to visit Nepal and Hong Kong to examine problems connected with the future of the Gurkhas and the Hong Kong garrison. As you will have seen from my letter of 10th October to McCluney, the visit was originally intended to last for two weeks, to include Singapore and Kuala Lumpur; but pressure of departmental business connected with the proposed legislation for the now reserve force in Northern Ireland has compelled . Hattersley to shorten the visit. The party will consist of Mr. and Mrs. Hattersley, the Private Secretary and the Personal Air Secretary. Mrs. Hattersley's personal expenses will, of course, be borne by Mr. Hattersley.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary has agreed to the visit and I understand that the Chief Whip has indicated to Mr. Hattersley that his absence for the week is acceptable. I am copying this letter to McCluney (Foreign and. Commonwealth Office), Warron (Chief Whip's Office) and Robertson (Cabinet Office).
