Hong Kong Garrison (Expenditure)
Rear-Admiral Morgan Giles asked the Secretary of State for Defence what is the annual budgetary cost of the present garri- son in Hong Kong; and what propor- tign of the cost is in foreign exchange.
Mr. Reynolds: As my right hon. Friend has explained previously, we cannot give a meaningful figure of budgetary costs f forces in a particular area, because a given Service formation, wherever based, commonly has more than ope rôle, and because arbitrary conventions would have to be used in allocating between theatres such major elements as the rela- ted costs of the home base.

Boy Recruits

Inkerinan Barracks, Woking
Mr. Onslow asked the Secretary of State for Defence what proposals he now has for the use or disposal of land at Inkerman Barracks, Woking.
Mr. Reynolds: On present plans, the units currently occupying part of Inkerman Barracks will vacate it during 1970. We shall be retaining some of the existing married quafters for a fur- ther period; we are planning to build 23 more married quarters on part of the site; and some 22 acres have been sold or are on offer to the Surrey County Council for education/purposes. Further defence use of the remaining area is still under consideration,

Mr. John Macke: The conference held
11th and 12th December made a number of recommendations for action by river/authorities and other bodies to improve the scope and effectiveness of the present/flood warning systems. These are summarised in the Press Notice issued after the Conference. A copy of the Press Notice has been placed in the Library of the House.
