Will you please refer to my letter HKK 10/9 of 19 March about the recovery from the Hong Kong Government of the extra costs falling on defence votes as a result of the reinforcements needed during the internal security situation in the Colony during 1967.
We have now heard from Hong Kong who say that they are about half way through their discussions with the Command Secretary on this subject and that the discussions are still in progress. So far as the frontier fence is concerned, we should prefer to await the final outcome of the discussions before taking this particular matter further. We have accordingly asked Hong Kong to let us know the final position as soon as possible.
